Gum contouring
Reshaping the gum line to even out a gummy or uneven smile, often planned together with bonding or veneers.
What is gum contouring?
Sometimes called a gum lift, it removes or reshapes a small amount of gum so your teeth look better proportioned and the gum line is more even. Short-looking teeth can appear longer.
Is it right for me?
It suits people whose gums cover more tooth than usual or sit unevenly. The cause matters: a gummy smile can come from the lip or jaw, and then contouring will not help. Dr Abbasi examines your gums, measures the proportions and explains whether contouring, another treatment or nothing at all is best.
What to expect
Done under local anaesthetic. The gums are tender for a few days and you are given aftercare advice. It is often planned with bonding or veneers so tooth shape and gum line work together.
Risks
Discomfort, bleeding, sensitivity and, rarely, the gum line shifting as it heals. Healthy gums are essential before any cosmetic treatment.
Gum contouring: common questions
Is it painful?
It is done under local anaesthetic. The gums are usually sore for a few days afterwards.
How long is healing?
Around one to two weeks initially, with the gum line settling over a few months.
Is the result permanent?
Gum tissue can change over time, but in suitable cases results are generally stable.
